Questions from Unravelling Off Centre:

1) In my opinion, Vinod's parents put great emphasis on Vinod's result rather than his mentally health, which cause him downfall.
From the book "Off Centre" itself, as Vinod is an intellgent people[1], he is able to take higher standard of education , and because of it, Vinod's parents feel proud of it. They want to show off their child's academic achievement. To make Vinod able to find his employment to generate wealth for his life and his parent's life after their entirement. They give him the best of education such as Raffle Junior Vollage, National University of Singapore. However, when Vinod suffered from Mental illness, Depression. His parents ignore with his need (or love) and force him to take education from oversea. Eventually, Vinod can not bear with the stress with going to oversea for taking education from university because his parents treat him like a robot rather than treat him like a child[2], and Saloma is the only one(and only friend) who treat him well in his life.
If Vinod's parent put more love on Vinod's need but not his future, Vinod might able to cure his Depression and he would not leave Saloma forever.

[1]:"And I thought my life is over when I did not get straight As for my 'A' level"
Act 1 Scene 2 Page: 15

[2]:"All he needed was to further his education, to get his degree."
Act 4 Scene 3 Page: 106

2) To certain extent, I agree that "Vinod's high expectation cause his downfall." because he wants himself to get excellent academic result, he wants to protect Saloma and he wants to make himself being a perfect person.
From the book itself, Vinod's education is good, and he always score As from his examination. Further more, he also can able to go to any of university with his perfect 'A' level result. As he can study too well in his academic road, every student from his school might felt that he is the best student, which make them not able to make friend with him or they will suffer from his show off of result. Therefore, Vinod suffer from lack of friendship
As Vinod find Saloma as a losten kitty and she is even weaker than Vinod, he wants to protect her from the reality where are full of danger. In the later part of Off Centre, Saloma is robbed, but Vinod can not do anything about it as he frighten to the robber, and in the last three scene of Off Centre, Saloma almost become normal, but Vinod does not want her to recover.[1]
In the book Off Centre, Vinod meets two people ,one is Razali, and another one is Emily Gan. Razali is a guard in the flat, who is gentle, friendly and able to protect people. Both Vinod and Saloma treated him as their guardian. Emliy Gan is Saloma's friend, she encourages Saloma to grow stronger so that Saloma can cure her mental illness and gain independant from her mother. However, Vinod does not see Emily Gan until he meet she in his dream. The character of Razali is not stable and he can appear beside Vinod.[2]
In the world, 'perfect' can not use to describe any of the human. Therefore, Vinod should not boost himself to become a perfect man through his high expectation.

[1]"No, Saloma, I do not. There, Vinod had said it."
Act 5 Scene 1 Page:119

[2]"Vinod suddenly wakes up. He is wide awake. He just sits still. Razali appears."
Act 2 Scece 4 Page:77

3) In Off Centre, Saloma let herself become stronger and finally she becomes Centre, the reason is she meets Vinod and Emily, and the chain of events after the robber rob her.
At first, Saloma is a nervous girl who suffer from Schezophrenia, she meets Vinod in the Oasis Club, she does not have a courage to talk to Vinod until he demanded Saloma to talk with him persistently.Vinod gives her a courage to against the reality world. In the flashback, Saloma meets Emily Gan in mental hospital, Saloma was even nervous than the time she meets Vinod. Emily Gan gives her an advice which able her to meet the difficulties in her life especailly when somebody take advantage of her.
After robber's event, Vinod went off all the comminucation tool and locked himself as long as three weeks, Emily commited suicide with two month pragnent. It makes Saloma afraid that she can not able to cop with the reality world because she depends on both Vinod and Emily. Eventually, she waked up from her dream of depending people when she wanted to save the bird but that bird refused and accidentally fall down.
After that, Saloma become stronger, and even stronger than both Vinod and Emily who give her advices and courages.
"You can call me anytime."
Act 1 Scene 2 Page: 14
"No, Saloma, you are not stupid at all. I know that as I can read your mind. Can your mother read minds, can't her?"
Act 2 Scene 2 Page: 58

4)To certain extent, I agree that Razali is the key to the plot of Off Centre.
Razali appeared at Act 2 Scene 3, he is a guardian of void deck in the flat, and he disappeared at Act 5 Scene 1.
In Act 2 Scene 3, when Razali appear, Vinod introduced Razali to Saloma, and Saloma treated Razali as her father. It implied that the reason behinf Saloma being mental patient related with her father. Razali seems can read the heart inside both Saloma and Vinod, and he is friendly.
In Act 2 Scene 4 , perhaps Vinod having a nightmare, he suddenly wake up and Razali appear, Razali keep saying the negative words to Vinod but he ignored. Eventually, Vinod takes the pill. Perhaps , those negative words might be the thought from Vinod's mind because he has Depression which makes him think something negatively everytime.
In Act 5 Scene 1, Vinod blamed Razali did not come to the void deck to save Saloma, and Razali suddenly change his character, he does not treat both Vinod and Saloma as well as the period during Act 2 Scene 3. Perhaps Vinod's will become weaker and he depended somebody to protect them while Saloma almost become Centre and want to gain independent after the robber's event.
To Saloma, he is her father who give her hope and able her to become normal. However, to Vinod, he is too depend on Razali and he makes his mental illness being worsen instead of begin to cure.
"When I was in Primary One, I took my friend's ruler at school, when he asked me, I made a lie. After school, when I reached home, my mother said that my father was died."
Act 2 Scene 3 Page: 70
"You need a voice, a voice."
Act 2 Scene 4 Page: 78
5) In Off Centre, Vinod is the good evidence of "give, sympathise, control".
In Act 1 Scene 1, he gives his care to Saloma and Saloma attracted by him. In Act 1 Scene 2, Vinod shows his intellegent to Saloma and make Saloma able to believe and admire him. In Act 1 Scene 2 and 3, Vinod shows his humour to Saloma, now, Saloma can not do anythings with out him.In Act 4 Scene 2, Vinod cut off all the communication tool such as phone, radio and television. Soon, In Act 4 Scene 3, Saloma wants to depend on Vinod, she suffer from the day with out Vinod. However, Vinod can not "control" Saloma because in the last part of Act 4 Scene 3, she understand that she could not depend on any people any more. Saloma also feel that Vinod is trying to control her.
Suprisingly, Vinod controlled by Saloma even thought Saloma did not notice it.
Vinod also controlled by his parents as his parents give him life, education. Sympathise him by the parent-child relationship and control him to get into University to get a degree. Althought Vinod is not willing to leave Saloma to go oversea for education, the cage from parent is diffucult to break.
To maintain the relationship between each other, "give, sympathise, control" is a worthless way. Therefore, both Vinod and his parents had done wrong.

Act Scene Page:
6) The two main role, Vinod and Saloma, they suffer from mental illness, and their social status is not good as they are the kind of person who is victim or take advantage by other people.
Vinod is a intelligent people, he score well in his examinations, his parents encourage him to get up to University to get a degree. After he suffer from Depression, his parents do not notice it, enforce him to continue with his study, this make him do not have the courage to cure his ill. Further more, his friends in Junior College afraid on him after his breakdown, it makes Vinod not able to make friend easily and making his Depression more serious. In addition, Mr Chow did not treat him as a normal person but the crazy who might breakdown, which makes him not able to trust other people.
Saloma's father died and her mother work alone to feed her. When Saloma wanted to cure her illness, her mother declined and she believes that Saloma was posess by the evil. This makes Saloma do not have confident to face against the social because she lost the support from her family, and her mother do not want her to work outside. Azman taking advantage to Saloma and it makes Saloma do not dare to face the reality world because she afraid that she might encounter a person like Azman.
Mental patients are all the normal men such like patients who have illness in their mind. Therefore, we should treat them as the normal person.
"Saloma, my parents are wishing I will get well by tommorrow and go abroad to study by the next day, graduate on Friday, study my Masters on Saturday and start work as Deputy Public Prosecutor on Monday, They are concerned, so I can rest on Sunday."

A Dream of China:Discussion

1. "However, China had nothing to say to my spirit, if indeed land speaks to sprirt. My spirit was an alien here as I was. It inclined towards a diamond city of trees and meaningful occupation, effciently sparkling in the modern world. That was where I truly belonged, among skyscrapers with glass fronts and gold-encrusted orchids."
Do you think the reference to Singapore as a "diamond city is apt? Why or Why not? How would you describe your feelings towards Singapore, using imagery you feel sutable?

I think it is sutable to refer Singapore as a "diamond city".
It is because Singapore is a small island but it is very strong as there are a stronge bond between peoples. And diamond is also small but it is impossible to hurt it because there are a bond between the carbon.
I find Singapore is the infinity country which can overcome various of difficulties and challenges, such like a diamond.

2."With great grandness, my uncle ordered orange drinks from the waiter. He criticized the glasses as dirty when the dirnks arrived and insisted on new ones......I kept buying him the orange drinks he swallowed with such relish."

Why do you think her uncle behaves in this manner? Do you feel sorry for him or do you regard him with distaste, as his niece does?

I think Her uncle behaves in this manner is because he is thirsty, and the author is his niece. Therefore, he finds it is fine to him to behave in that manner. However, it would be unpleasant to me if my uncle behaved like that. It is because I am younger than him, and he is not my father, there is no reason to me for keep buying drinks to him.

3. "I returned to Singapore alienated from the China I saw, but no less eager to listen to my father's stories of the most beautiful of beautiful lands."

Do you find this a contradiction? Why or why not?

I agree that the statement is contradiction, because author faced the bad manner from her uncle. Although China is totally different from the stories that what her father said, the myth is still attracting author because dreams are more pleasurable than the reaility, an it can boost her motivation in life.

4."A country is only good as its men. My father is a good man......whichever country can claim him as its own."

What do you think the narrator means by the first statement?
To what extent would you agree that her father is a good man? Give reasons for your answer. Which country, do you think, should claim him for its own?

According to the first statement, I think the narrator means that the country will become better if the citizens here are good. I agree that narrator's father is a good man because he miss his homeland, he always tell narrator about the story of the beautiful China. However, he also find his guilt to stay in Singapore because he did not stay in China to fight and bring it's better future. I think that the country which wants to become good, should claim narrator's father for its own. It is because the country is not only good as its men but the government itself too. If the goverenment in that country is bad and it claims good men for its own. The coutry will not become better.

Lit Homework-III

Q1:
In the story paper, there contained two traditional chinese culture involved. In my opinion, I find the author quote those two culture for irony but burning paper house is to make Tay Soon's dream come through. From the beginning of the story, Tay Soon dreamed for his house, but he used the dangerous way to earn the money. Further more, Tay Soon also said money will be keep growing more just like paper by buy shares. However, he lost all his money, and he also became crazy about it. Tay Soon's mother used several ways to cure Tay Soon's illness. She let Tay Soon drank the water with burnt paper to expel the evil which posessed him(but it is also means that Tay Soon have to face the fact). After Tay Soon's death, his mother burn the house for him, it is because he had dreamed for it(It also means Tay Soon's dream had been destroyed.)

In the story Tanjong Rhu, Ah-Wah's mother wanted her son to remember about the past, she did many things for him. Lighting joss-sticks and praying to his father is an evidence. As Ah-Wah being busy to work, he had forgotten the past, he also did not knew how to speak his cantonese. His mother had tried her best to do something make him remember the past.

Q2:
To myself, I had found the relevance of those traditional chinese culture rituals in my society as necessary still. It is because it can let the youth remember the past. For evidence, Tanjong Rhu, Ah- Wah's mother pray her husband is a way to make Ah- Wah to remember the past

Q3:
I think the elderly in Singapore are out of touch with the contemporary world. Mrs Li, Ah-Wah's mother, she found her deaded husband more important than anything. Compare to the contemporary world, citizens in Singapore always look forward even they are facing frustration. In my opinion, althought those elderly's thought is an annoy . However, their thought is very heartful competting to the youth in Singapore.

Q4:
To myself, looking back at the past is a good thing. In the story Tanjong Rhu, the topic of it is to remember the past so that the error will not be repeated. However, it is also can be a negative habit if people always think about the past, because it causes them unable to face the reality and inoxicated in the past.

Lit Assignment 2

Choose two stories that reveal the thinking of an older generation of singaporeans what new insights have you gained from such a revealation.
Stories:
-The history of tea
-The move

The history of tea is about an older generation who find different races hateful and he or she was frighten of them. It is because he or she did not understood the races and the religions clearly, plus there were some of the information which against the race which had influenced the old generation. Therefore, the old generation usually disagree with her/his children to marry with a person with different race. The evidence from the story is at page , Beverly had a marriage with a gentleman. However, when her parents discovered the identity of that gentleman as a part of the Jewish. They decided to let Beverly to think again at first. This showed the conflict between different religion because there were lots of people from old generation found Jewish greedy and evil, but actually, Jewish were not.

The story The Move is about a grandmother being rather sulky when she was not allowed to bring alone her one and only pomegranate tree to a new house. Being in the older generation, most grandparents would sulk as though they are being left alone. In this case, it is rather normal for the grandmother to sulk when she was not allowed to bring along her pomegranate tree and doesnt want to move out of teh house. Not to forget she also sulks because her things are being thrown away. The evidence from the story is on page, 205, that says, "The old lady was vaguely irritated for the first time. It's always the plants that get left behind. Why?" This concludes that she is rather dissappointed with her children.

Choose five linker and write comments of 50-100 words about the content of the blog (not design/ pictures/ layouts).

You must identify yourself.

Lit Holiday Assignment(Completed)

(1) Evening Under Frangipani

Conflicts:
Pg 49-Marriage
Pg 53-Diffrent in generation
Pg 62-Diffrent in view(about Elaine's father)
Pg 65-Prakash finds job, but he finds it difficult with his qualifications(internal conflict)
Pg 77-Elaine mentioned she is not feminist.

Climax:
Prakash sight Elanie with Mike in the wine bar,and Prakash stood under the Frangipani tree which is the evidence of the love between Elanie and Prakash. To maintain the love, Prakash pretented to become stronger.
Pg78-81

Resolution:It is an ironic resolution.I thought the relationship between Prakash and Elanie will become better in the story. However, Elanie meet Mike and they have a nice evening in the wine bar while Prakash sawthat brutal facts under the Frangipani tree.(Pg 78) In addition, Prakash wanted to become stronger so he can maintain relationship between him and Elanie. In pg 83, Elanie's mother asked Elanie aboutPrakash's strengthness. And Elanie answered " Yes, he is too strong"(Pg 84)

Characters:

Prakash
He is nervous(during job interview, pg 27)
,but he become brave after Elaine wanted to break up with him(during job interview, pg 69)
He is intelligence(use key to cut the pomelo, pg 57)
He is crude(laughing on Elaine about her family members, pg 62)

Elaine
She is feminist(believe women are equal to men, pg 49)

Elaine's father
He is passionate (Collection of dead insects, pg 55)

Elaine's mother
She is judgemental (she baitted Prakash, pg 59)
She is thoughful (she worried about Prakash, 83)

Mike
Gentle(pg 79)

The most interesting part is the title"Evening under Frangipani".
It has a totally negative meaning to Prakash (He saw Elanie drinking wine with Mike)
but it has a positive meaning to Elanie too
(She felt happy when she share her experience with Mike rather than with Prakash).

(2)Lee
Conflict:
-Lee's dad felt awkward to be in the car with Lee(Pg 87)
-Diffrent in race about thought (Pg 88)
-Lee's dad dose not like it when Lee talks about Alau Piscopo.(Pg 88,89)
-Lee do not like to eat meat, but Lee's father want she to eat(Pg 91)

Climax:
Lee finally told her dad about her mother's death which related to David Hockney's print.(Pg 99)

Resolution:
Complete resolution.
Lee finally did not resent being a chinese as much as she did after her dad had said something.Although everything is remain unchange. Lee's dad did not felt regret as Lee solved his question in his mind.

Characters:
Lee's dad
He is decent (He being serious about Lee's mother, Pg 88)
He is radio fans(He mentioned that he spend more time listen to radio more than studying, Pg 104)

Lee
She is rude(she plays the music too loud, pg 87)
She is curious(she wonders why the marriage of Lee's parent was split up, pg 91)
She is mature(she talked like a adult, pg 93)

Alan Piscopo
He is tall(Lee said his height is six foot one, which is about 186cm, pg 89)

The most interesting part in this story is about David Hockney's print. It is because Lee mentioned that her mother's death was related to this art piece. However, David Hockney is not the murderer.I guess it is some body who is a holic inDavid Hockney's print or otherelse. Lee's mother's death also became a "wire" which linkLee and Lee's father together.

(3) A history of tea

Conflict:
Beverly's sense is totally diffrent from Tien Yee(When both of them drink tea(pg 108)
Beverly is related with Tien Yee, but their faces looked not related(pg 109)
Beverly's family background is diffrent from Tien Yee's(pg 116)
Beverly's parents had difficulty about their marriage because of race(pg 119)

Climax:Tien Yee said the truth about the relationship between he and Beverly(pg 116)

Resolution:The resolution is a complete resolution. It is because Tien Yee's family are all together eventhoguht there are diffrent in races and places.

Character:
Tien Yee:
He is poor(When he drinking tea, Pg 108)
He is calm(He is relax when he told to the reader about the relationship between he and Beverly, Pg 116)

Beverly:
She is high-class(When she drinking the tea, Pg 108)
She is tall(Tien Yee's describtion on Beverly, Pg 109)

Tien Yee's grand mother:
She is lowly-educated(she did not know English, Pg 110)
She is racist(she said Uncle Raja is an oily man, pg 112)
She is arrogant(she refused for let Tien Yee's mother come back, pg 115)

Tien Yee's grandfather:
He is brave(He didn't hide or escape , pg 120)

Uncle Raja:
He is a Ceylonese(Introduction on Beverly's family, Pg 111)

The most interesting part in the story is about the history of Tien Yee's family. It is because his family have diffrent races such as Ceylonese, Englishman and Chinese.Even thought Tien Yee's family did not like Uncle Raja, Elanie's family have difficultyabout mix-races. All the problems are solved and Tien Yee's family are being altogether.

(4) Release

Conflict:
Eileen's character is diffrent from Philip's (pg 143)
Eileen needs help, but people refused to do so(pg 144)

Climax:Eileen find herself helpless to solve the problem about her neighbour's dog because the people refused to help her. However, there is a person who want to help her.(pg 144-146)

Resolusion:The resolusion is ironly resolusion. It is because the problems have not solved yet.Even the man kill the neighbour's dog really can give Eileen "release", but thereare another problem occured and can not be solve easily.

Character:
Eileen
She is gentle(she greets her neighbour, pg 139)
She is innocent(she believes that the man will help her shut the dogs' mouth up, pg 144)

Eileen's neighbour
She is arrogant(she mataphor Eileen as a dog, pg 140)
She is rich( she has a gold bracelet, pg 140)
She is selfish(she cuts down Eileen's tree, pg 141)

Philip
He is nervous( he did not help Eileen, pg 143)
He is busy( he did not came home so often, pg 140)

The most interesting part of the story is Eileen call for help. And that person's voice in the line always apologize that "they"can not do any thing to let the dog shut up. It shows that humanscan not help anything if other people faced some problems, and it is notbecause they can not help , but they are lazy to help.

(5) An Obtuary for Fifth Aunt come late

Conflict:
Even though people said bad words on their aunt, but Author's is different from them.(Pg149,150)
In the past time, girls were treated badly. But now, girls are treated nicely(Pg 152)
Even author's aunt is a family member, her

Climax:
Author talks about how her/his aunt lived from her childhood to now.( Pg151~Pg158)

Resolution:
The resolution is completed. Even the fifth aunt was deaded and the obituary of her death had came out.
The author does not forget about her, and he can recognize the story about her very clearly.

Character:
Aunt:
She is caring(she gave Author's family things to eat, Pg 149)
She is nervous(she keep apologize when she fell off her stool, Pg149)

Grandfather:
He is rude( he always slap Aunt without reason since Aunt's childhood,Pg151)
He treat his children unfairly(he gave the goods to his boy but he treated his girl very badly, Pg152,153)

Grandmother:
She is nervous(she did not stopped her husband from abusing their children, Pg 152)
She is caring(she wanted to send Aunt to An Ting's family rather than be killed by her father, Pg 153)

The most interesting part of the story is the theme of it. The story tells me that people have to
care for their family and their friends. Otherwise, they would felt regreted if their family member passed
away. In additions, author can remember about his fifth aunt. Which means he care for her.

(6) The Past time
Conflict:
Mr Lee asked Tai Poh for going on TV, but Tai Poh rejected(Pg 213)
Tai Poh experienced the lonliness after his gang was defeated(Pg 214)
Tai Poh wanted to forget about his past, but he had met a girl he had familiar of.(Pg 215)
Tai Poh's past time is diffrent than Mr Lee(Pg 216)

Climax:
Mr Lee said his past time to Tai Poh(Pg 217)

Resolution:
The resolution is open ending, because Tai Poh and Mr Lee mentiond that it is a past time and
not the real life.

Character:
Tai Poh:
He was dependent(He grew familiar with the meaning of lonlinessPg 214)
He is not able to find job(He had jailed before, Pg 214)

Mr Lee:
He is educated(Tai Poh mentioned, Pg 213)
He is crude(He forced Tai Poh to lie the audience on the TV, Pg 213)

A girl:
She is beautiful(Tai Poh mentioned, Pg 215)

The most interesting part of the story is the background of the girl that Tai Poh had mentioned.
It is because the girl has a certain relationship with Tai Poh which we do not know. In addition,
the woman in Pg 219 may be that girl because Tai Poh had said "He could have... let's just he did."
after he bought five tickets from her.
